DURHAM, N.C. – Junior defender Taylor Virden was among the 25 players named to the 2013 All-America squad, as announced by the organization Friday. Virden received her second All-America accolades of the 2013 season, as she was also selected to the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) first team .

A native of Ellicott City, Md., Virden turned in a career year during her junior campaign with career highs in draw controls (54) and ground balls (32), in addition to matching a career high in caused turnovers (18). She was a key member of a defensive unit that held opponents to just 8.95 goals per game and limited 11 opponents to single-digit scoring, including in a 23-0 shutout of Presbyterian Feb. 10. Also a force on the draw, Virden set a single-game career high with six draw control wins March 2 in a win over Vanderbilt, and finished the 2013 campaign ranked sixth on the program’s all-time list for career draw controls with 122 in three seasons.

A Tewaaraton Award nominee and first team All-South Region and All-ACC honoree this season, Virden was also the first Duke defender to garner IWLCA All-America accolades since Aiyana Newton earned the distinction in 2008.
