DURHAM, N.C. – Senior Henrique Cunha garnered Ronald McDonald House Charities Duke Student-Athlete of the Week after passing Doug Root in the program’s record book for most career doubles wins (122) and helping the fifth-ranked Duke men’s tennis team earn two 9-0 victories against in-state opponents Elon and Charlotte.
A native of Jaú, Brazil, Cunha and sophomore Raphael Hemmeler defeated Charlotte's Forrest Edwards and Jack Williams, 8-2, to clinch the record Sunday from the No. 1 doubles position. With the win, Cunha and Hemmeler, the top-ranked doubles pair in the country, have now won 12 consecutive matches dating back to the fall and own a 15-1 record for the season.
In singles, 11th-ranked Cunha went 2-0 over the weekend at the No. 1 singles position, including a span of winning 18 consecutive games over his final three sets of the weekend after going down a break to Elon’s Cameron Silverman, 3-0. He defeated Silverman Saturday, 6-2, 6-3, and closed the weekend on Sunday by downing Williams of Charlotte, 6-0, 6-0.
