DURHAM, N.C. - Recently, GoDuke.com sat down with Olympic silver medalist and NCAA champion diver Abby Johnston to learn more about the Upper Arlington, Ohio native.
GoDuke.com: What has been your proudest moment at Duke? Abby Johnston: Winning an NCAA title because a lot of hard work had gone into it and it was something I had wanted coming in. It really showed how far the program has come in a short amount of time.
GoDuke.com: What is the most misunderstood thing about diving? AJ: People don't understand why we stand in the showers, or why we use those little towels. It's because it's cold in there, so we dry off with the towels to stay warm and we shower to keep ourselves warm. We're not just playing [laughs].
GoDuke.com: What's your favorite part of being a Duke student-athlete? AJ: Being a part of a team and having that group of people on campus going through the same thing. It's really a unique group of student-athletes in general. You can really relate to each other and know what each other is going through. I think that network of people is my favorite part.
GoDuke.com: What has been your favorite class at Duke? AJ: I don't want to let any of my teachers down with this one, but I really liked my photography class. I wouldn't consider myself an artsy person, but one of my pictures is hanging in the Allen Building now so I guess I'm kind of artsy.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite spot on campus? AJ: Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion.
GoDuke.com: Are there any words of wisdom you would like to pass on to freshmen or any future Blue Devils? AJ: It goes quickly, so make the most of it all.
GoDuke.com: Tell us about when you first started diving. AJ: I did summer league diving when I was pretty little and I had a lot of gymnastics tendencies. So once I switched over to club diving when I was 16, it took me a little while to get rid of those habits.
GoDuke.com: As a kid did you know what you wanted to be when you grow up? What do you want to be now? AJ: When I was a kid I always said I wanted to be a hairdresser or a doctor and my grandma would be like, 'Please, a doctor.' I still really love doing my roommates' hair but I think I'm going to go with the doctor path.
GoDuke.com: Who has been the biggest influence on your life and why? AJ: My parents, hands down. They've been there for me every step of the way and their unwavering support is really what has gotten me to become the person that I am today.
GoDuke.com: What's your favorite midnight snack? AJ: Pizza or waffles with chocolate chips on them.
GoDuke.com: What is one possession you can't live without? AJ: My cat, Lilly. She's so cute and I love her. Except she's at home so I guess I'm technically living without her. But my mom sends me pictures on a daily basis.
GoDuke.com: If you weren't a diver, what other sport would you play? AJ: Three things - soccer, or tennis or if I were a boy I'd be a football player.
GoDuke.com: Who would be your dream date? AJ: Ryan Gosling. I sincerely think he would like me too.
