DURHAM, N.C. - Duke redshirt senior quarterback Sean Renfree has been named the recipient of the Pop Warner National College Football Award, an accolade presented by Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc., that honors a Pop Warner alumnus who has made a difference on the field, in the classroom and in his community.
Renfree was chosen from a group of four finalists that included Miami running back Mike James, Connecticut wide receiver Nick Williams and Michigan offensive lineman Patrick Omameh.
A three-year starter and two-year team captain, Renfree has led Duke to a 6-5 record this season and bowl eligibility for the first time since 1994. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native also has received recognition for his off-field accomplishments this season by being named a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete, a member of the AFCA Good Works Team and a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award.
Renfree is one of the most accurate passers in the ACC, ranking third in the league and tied for 14th nationally with a .673 completion percentage (224-of-333). That mark is on pace to set a school record, potentially breaking his own standard of .650 set in 2011. Renfree, who holds or shares 12 school records, is tops on Duke's career completion percentage list as well, posting a mark of .643. He also ranks among Duke's all-time top five in pass completions (2nd; 825), passing touchdowns (5th; 46), passing efficiency (2nd; 127.21), passing yards (4th; 8,675) and 300-yard passing games (t3rd; 9).
On the ACC’s all-time charts, Renfree ranks fourth in pass completions, sixth in pass completion percentage, tied for eighth in 300-yard passing games and 14th in passing yardage.
In the classroom, Renfree is pursuing a graduate degree in humanities. He owns a 3.81 grade point average in his graduate program and recently was named to the Capital One Academic All-District III Team. He earned his undergraduate degree in public policy and is a four-time member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll and a two-time selection to the Academic All-ACC Football Team.
Renfree is also active in the Durham community, volunteering his time with numerous community service projects, including the Duke Children's Hospital, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Read with the Blue Devils, Durham Rescue Mission, the MLK "Million Meals" Event and Active Teens.
The Pop Warner National College Football Award is presented during the annual Pop Warner Super Bowl at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla. In 2010, the inaugural award was presented to former University of Nebraska and current New York Giants' defensive back Prince Amukamara. In 2011, the award was presented to University of Virginia and current Washington Redskins' cornerback Chase Minnifield.
