DURHAM, N.C. - Strong pitching, stellar defense and a Chris Marconcini solo home run powered the Black team to a 1-0 victory over Blue in Tuesday's game seven as Black captured the Duke baseball team's Fall World, 4-3.

Junior Drew Van Orden set the tone for the Black pitching staff in the first as he struck out three of the four batters he faced. The hard-throwing righthander did not allow a run in his last four outings of the fall. Not to be outdone, freshman Nick Hendrix followed Van Orden's strong first inning with a 1-2-3 second, striking out Ryan Munger to end the inning.

That set the stage in the third inning for Marconcini, who hammed an 0-1 slider from sophomore Remy Janco into the pine trees in right field for the 1-0 lead. Marconcini's home run proved to be the only scoring in the game seven pitchers' duel as four Black relievers - Jake Cosart, Josh Ruffin, Michael Matuella and Dalton Brown - combined to pitch five scoreless innings for the victory.

The Blue squad appeared poised for a rally in the sixth when junior Mark Lumpa walked to begin the frame. However, Brown induced junior Angelo La Bruna to hit into a 4-6-3 double play. Sophomore Reed Anthes hit a shot up the middle for an apparent base hit, but freshman Kenny Koplove ranged far to his left and threw out Anthes to end the inning, the scrimmage and the series.

Junior Jordan Betts continued his hot hitting for Blue with a 2-for-3 outing. Lumpa and Aaron Cohn also added singles for Blue. David Perkins had a double to right and Grant McCabe walked twice for Black in the win.

Duke now enters its off-season conditioning program as it prepares for the start of the 2013 campaign. The Blue Devils open their schedule with a three-game series against Florida in Gainesville.
