DURHAM, N.C. - Three Black Team pitchers combined to limit the Blue Team to one hit as Black cruised past Blue, 9-1, Friday to take a 3-2 lead in the Duke Baseball Team's Fall World Series.

Freshman James Marvel threw four, no-hit innings to set the tone for Black, giving way to relievers Drew Van Orden and Michael Matuella, who also stymied the Blue bats. Van Orden has been particularly dominant over the second half of the fall as the Manhattan Beach, Calif., native has not allowed a run over his past eight innings of work.

On offense, seven different players recorded hits for the Black squad, led by rookie Jalen Philips' 2-for-5 effort.

Black got on the board early and built a 5-0 lead by the second inning. Senior Jeff Kremer drove in two runs with a double in the first, and later scored on a double by junior Matt Berezo. In the second, junior Mike Rosenfeld tripled to plate freshman Jake Cosart, then scored on a wild pitch for Black's fifth run of the first two frames.

Black's offensive production was more than enough for Marvel, Van Orden and Matuella as the three right-handed hurlers combined to strike out five over nine innings. Blue's only hit of the game came off the bat of senior Ryan Munger, who drove home sophomore Reed Anthes with a two-out double in the top of the seventh.

Sophomore Sarkis Ohanian returned to action for Blue and was very effective in relief, retiring all six hitters he faced.

The two teams return to action Saturday at Jack Coombs field with game six slated for an 11 a.m., start.
