DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke women's cross country team is ranked tenth nationally after a second place finish at the ACC Championships last weekend. Recently, GoDuke.com sat down with senior harrier Sophia Ziemian to learn more about the Lewisburg, Pa., native.
GoDuke.com: What has been your proudest moment at Duke? Sophia Ziemian: I think my freshman year when our team finished eighth at nationals. It was really exciting for our team and for myself personally because coming out of high school I never really expected to be racing at nationals my freshman year. It was very exciting.
GoDuke.com:What do you think the most misunderstood thing about cross country is? SZ: I think people don't really understand what we do, they are like 'so you just run all the time?' I don't think people really understand how we train, how each day is really different like different types of workouts. I think a lot of people looking in just think we go for the same run every day.
GoDuke.com:What is your favorite spot on campus? SZ: I really like running in the Duke forest and I really enjoy studying in the K center.
GoDuke.com: Any words of wisdom to pass on to freshman or future Blue Devils? SZ: Enjoy all of the opportunities that you have, and make sure you have fun. Enjoy your sport.
GoDuke.com: How did you get started in cross country? SZ: I started in ninth grade to get in shape for basketball. I was really into basketball then, and I ended up being a lot better at running than I was at basketball.
GoDuke.com: As a kid, did you know what you wanted to be when you grew up? SZ: I think as a kid I wanted to be a basketball player, but now I am in biomedical engineering so I am interested in getting a masters or further graduate school, but probably doing some sort of research or teaching in that area.
GoDuke.com: If you could pick anyone, who would you choose to be your mentor? SZ: I think my parents have been great mentors to me up to this point, so I don't know if I would pick anyone else.
GoDuke.com: If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do? SZ: Give the money to my family, or find a charity that I could give some of the money to. I don't really feel like I need a lot of money personally.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite late night snack? SZ: Probably some type of fruit, maybe strawberries.
GoDuke.com: Do you have any hidden talents? SZ: I played in the marching band in high school. I played the trumpet, but I also played the piano and I guess a lot of people probably don't know that.
GoDuke.com: What is one possession you cannot live without? SZ: Probably my running shoes
GoDuke.com: What has been your favorite class at Duke? SZ: Last spring I took a biomechanics class which I really liked, and I also took an anatomy of the lower extremities class, which is a cadaver lab for the lower extremities which was really fun, so probably those two.
GoDuke.com: What is one chore you absolutely hate doing? SZ: Probably vacuuming.
