DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke field hockey team (5-8, 0-4) will travel to Harrisonburg and Norfolk, Va., this weekend to take on James Madison (7-4, 2-2) on Friday, October 12th at 7:00 p.m., and eighth ranked Old Dominion (10-3, 5-0) on Sunday, October 14th at 1:00 p.m.
Duke's Last Time Out On Saturday, October 6, Duke fell to two-time defending national champion Maryland 2-0 in College Park, Md. Duke held the Terps to seven shots during regulation and both squads picked up four penalty corners a piece in the defensive battle. In the first half, the Blue Devils found the back of the net off a penalty corner play but the goal was called back by the officials on account of being too dangerous.
Facing James Madison Duke leads the series with James Madison 14-11-1. The two teams last met on October 9, 2011 which resulted in a 9-1 victory for the Blue Devils. Then sophomore Emmie Le Marchand recorded her first career hat trick against the Duke's and six other Blue Devils contributed goals. Duke also outshot James Madison 30-3 in the win.
Facing No. 8 Old Dominion Sunday marks the second time that Duke has faced Old Dominion this season. In their first matchup on September 16, the Blue Devils fell to the Monarchs 3-1 while playing with a shortened roster because six members were competing in the Junior Pan American Games. Duke's lone goal came off a second half penalty shot executed by Le Marchand.
In 2011, The Blue Devils defeated the then-ranked number one Monarchs 2-1 on their home field in Norfolk, Va. Mary Nielsen scored the game winning goal just 29 seconds into the first overtime to seal the upset. ODU's head coach Beth Anders is in her 30th and final season with Monarchs where she has earned a historic record of 553-131-7.
