DURHAM, N.C.- The Duke volleyball team will continue its homestand next weekend against Clemson on Friday and Georgia Tech on Saturday. Recently, GoDuke.com sat down with senior middle blocker Christiana Gray to learn more about the Carmel, Ind., native.
GoDuke.com: What has been your proudest moment at Duke? Christiana Gray: I would have to say, it's a volleyball moment. When we beat Ohio to go to the sweet 16 in Cameron. It was one of those crazy moments. None of our stats were better than theirs, we maybe had one, but somehow we pulled out a win. It gives me goose bumps to think about it.
GoDuke.com: What is the most misunderstood thing about your sport? CG: That we are just girls in spandex. We are athletes, too. We are big strong athletes, and we work really hard. Sometimes people think it is one of the more girlie sports, but we are just as tough as the rest of them.
GoDuke.com: What was your favorite food as a child? CG: Prunes. I was like an old lady. I can't eat them now, but I have all kinds of pictures of me with that prune can.
GoDuke.com: How about now? What is your favorite food now? CG: Wetzel's pretzels. Hands down.
GoDuke.com: What about your favorite midnight snack? CG: Wetzel's pretzels isn't open at midnight, so I would have to say regular old pretzels.
GoDuke.com: What was your favorite part of being a Duke student-athlete? CG: The fact that we get to play in Cameron is really cool. We get to make it our own for that season, and not many people get to do that. Lots of people come in just to take pictures and we are on the floor playing, which is great.
GoDuke.com: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? CG: I actually think I wanted to be the president. I wanted to be the first female president. That and the tallest lady in the world, but that didn't work out.
GoDuke.com: How about now? What do you want to be now? CG: I had an internship with Nike this past summer, and I would love to work for Nike in marketing. That would be my dream job.
GoDuke.com: Who has been the biggest influence in your life? CG: My mom. She was a single mom, and we moved all over, and she was a big figure in my life. Being a single mom, a strong woman, doing things on her own, and I related to her a lot.
GoDuke.com: If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do? CG: I think I would get a pair of size 13 women's shoes made. I never have women's shoes. I would just want to have a pair of my own women's shoes, and then I'd do some other stuff like donating.
GoDuke.com: If you could be a superhero, what would you want your super powers to be? CG: Flying would be so cool. Flying definitely. I am taller than everyone else, so I can see over the top, but if I could fly and see everything, that would be awesome.
GoDuke.com: Do you have any hidden talents? CG: I have a really good Cher impression, but I am not going to do it for you!
GoDuke.com: Anything on the iPod that might be embarrassing? CG: You know, I think I have some Justin Bieber, but I am not sure if I listen to it.
GoDuke.com: What is currently on the DVR? What's the best show on TV? CG: I have actually gotten into Prison Break. I am not all the way through it yet, but I am very intrigued.
GoDuke.com: What is one possession you can't live without? CG: A giant sweatshirt. I am cold everywhere. I love my giant sweatshirt. I am a big girl, and I like feeling little.
