ANTALYA, TURKEY –  Senior Tim Gornik and freshman Motin Yeung opened play at the Men’s World Team Amateur Championship, played at the Antalya and the Cornelia Golf Clubs in Antalya, Turkey, on Thursday. Gornik posted an even-par 72 for Slovenia, while Yeung shot a four-over 74 for Hong Kong.

Gornik fired an even-par round of 72 on the first day of the tournament at the Faldo Course at Cornelia Golf Club. After opening his round with a double-bogey, he rebounded with five birdies, nine pars and three bogeys over the final 17 holes. Gornik registered the top score for team Slovenia, who fired a two-over 146 and is tied for 25th. As an individual, Gornik is tied for 49th, trailing first round leader Chris Williams of the United States by eight strokes. 

Yeung recorded a four-over par, 74, in the first round of the tournament on the Sultan Course. After a four-over par, 39, on the front nine, the Blue Devil rookie rebounded on the back nine with an even-par, 36, with a birdie and a bogey on the scorecard. Yeung is tied for 99th at the event, while the Hong Kong team recorded a score of seven-over 149, to complete the day in 47th.

The U.S.  team is leading after day one of competition, with a 13-under 131. Mexico is four shots back and Korea is five shots behind the American team heading into the second day of competition.

The World Amateur Championship is comprised of more than 200 golfers and 72 countries. Three players represent each country while the top two individual scores comprise the team score.
