Littlejohn Coliseum (currently under renovation)
The $63.5 million renovation project for Littlejohn Coliseum renovation began in late May 2015.
“This is an exciting step for the future of our basketball programs and our athletic department,” director of athletics Dan Radakovich said. “We’ve said from the beginning of this process the goal is to have a completely different feel for our fans, alumni, students and student-athletes in this building, and that’s the direction we’re headed.”
Littlejohn Coliseum has served many needs of Clemson University, providing a facility capable of hosting athletic, academic, recreation, and student affairs programming. Renovating the building to be a richer, more energetic, high-performance environment will add significant value to the University and provide a competitive venue for the basketball program.
The rebuilt Coliseum will inspire and engage both the players and the fans through a whole new interior layout and design that will be extremely media rich. In addition to a renovated playing arena and seating bowl (approximately 8,500 seats), the facility will incorporate all aspects of men‘s and women‘s basketball program operations. This includes coaches‘ offices, weight rooms, locker rooms, video editing and theater areas housed in a separate practice facility addition.
Littlejohn Coliseum will also see a significant upgrade to the quality and character of the public exterior face of the building. The massing of the building will in large part remain, but the incorporation of transparent materials and the use of light in more contemporary ways will be high on the list of desired changes. In the end, the building will be transformed in almost every way.
Justification: Littlejohn Coliseum has been a landmark facility for Clemson University and its athletic programs for decades. Historical renovations and upgrades have aided the facility in maintaining appropriate functional use to service the wide array of hosted events – graduation, convocation, basketball games and practice, high school graduations, concerts, career fairs, and other events. These events are integral to Clemson University outreach offerings and need to remain a part of activity programming. They will continue to do so with a renovated Littlejohn Coliseum. The men’s and women’s basketball programs at Clemson, however, need a differentiator amongst our peers. While Littlejohn Coliseum currently meets the functional needs to operate the programs, the facility lacks inspirational and stimulating features requisite for national-level attention and growth. A major renovation aimed at creating a high-energy, quality environment that is highly engaging for players and spectators is critical.
Finance: This project will be funded through a combination of Athletic Facility Revenue Bonds, Operating Revenues, and Gifts. The bonds will be debt serviced through the Clemson Athletics Facilities Trust, a Foundation quasi-endowment created through private gifts invested with the Clemson University Foundation.
