You will attend both a large mandatory training session and a small mandatory training session before you can meet with students. 4. You are required to attend at least 2 more training sessions throughout the semester and failure to do so will result in dismissal. 5. All mentoring appointments must take place in the Yoh Center or Krzyzewski Center, unless otherwise approved.
Academic mentors play a critical function in the academic and social acclimation of freshman student-athletes. The mentor serves as an academic resource, offering learning strategies, study skills and time management techniques for academic success. More broadly, the mentor/student relationship is built on trust, gained through frequent interaction and working together. The academic mentor will work primarily with students on writing; an ability to write and convey proficient writing technique is essential.
Each week that you work with a student you must turn in a tutor timesheet, downloaded from this site or turned in electronically via email. The form must be submitted to Julie Vandiver in office 228 in the Krzyzewski Center. Mentors WILL NOT be paid for timesheets older than 30 days. Please indicate on your LAS report if a student fails to complete appointments or is consistently unprepared.
The current hourly rate for mentors is $15.00/hour. In order to be paid you must complete the proper paper work and tax forms. Before mentoring sessions begin, mentors must make it clear to all student athletes that there should be an outline or agenda of what will be accomplished for each tutoring session. Effective sessions should take no more than two hours.
Maintenance of academic integrity is of paramount importance in any educational endeavor and is the fundamental principle that guides the tutoring program in the Duke Department of Athletics. It goes without saying that a mentor should not do work for student-athletes or provide any level of help that causes the mentor discomfort. In addition, they should report to Julie Vandiver any student who asks for, or seems to expect, excessive or inappropriate assistance.
