LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State baseball team jumped out to 3-0 lead to start the game but North Dakota answered five-runs in the top of the second inning and never looked back to beat the Aggies 10-8 at Presley Askew Field Friday night.
NM State got a lead-off walk by left fielder Jay Sheely and a double from first baseman Cameron Haskins to set the table for the first of two runs of the game as senior centerfielder Quinnton Mack smacked a two-RBI single up the middle. Senior designated hitter Michael Paulson followed that up with an RBI single up the middle of his own giving the Aggies (11-37-1, 7-18-1 WAC) 3-0 lead.
Senior starting pitcher Bob Kraft struggled in the top of the second giving up five runs on five hits, including a three-run homer from left fielder Dalton Parrott that UND a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
Kraft stayed in the game to finish with 5.2 innings of work on the evening for the Aggies, falling to 0-5. North Dakota (22-25, 15-11 WAC) used six pitchers in the game with Andrew Favaro picking up the win in 1.2 innings on the mound without allowing a run. Reliever Jeff Campbell tallied his 10 save of the year after giving up one hit and one walk in the ninth.
After UND scored another run on a solo-home run by Campbell in the top of the third, the Aggies cut the lead to two when Haskins tallied his 19th RBI on his fourth sacrifice fly of the year.
Both teams were held scoreless in the fifth inning and followed that with a four-run sixth inning by each team to make it a 10-8 ballgame. After a leadoff out in the sixth, the next four Aggie batters tallied three singles and a double with Mack and Paulson picking up an RBI each. Catcher Lucas Martinez had the final run of the inning and the game when he hit a sacrifice fly to right field for an RBI.
Reliever Zach Freeman entered the game in the sixth and finished it off giving up a one run on four hits in 3.1 innings of work.
Mack finished the night going 3-of-5 from the dish with a double and three RBI and Martinez had a 3-of-4 evening with a double and two RBI.
The Aggies and North Dakota face off in the season finale at 12 p.m. (MT) at Presley Askew Field on Saturday, May 16. It is ‘Senior Day’ with the festivities now immediately following the game.
