Georgetown Holds Off Central Baptist, 79-74

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – (Box Score) No. 3-seeded Georgetown (Ky.) held off No. 6-seeded Central Baptist (Ark.), 79-74, to advance to the second round of the 81st Annual NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship, Wednesday morning at Municipal Auditorium. The Eagles will play the winner of No. 2-seeded Oklahoma City and No. 7-seeded Xavier (La.) on Friday, March 16 at 9:00 a.m. CDT.


  • Georgetown improved its season record to 26-6
  • Central Baptist ends its season with a record of 21-9


  • Georgetown guard Shadell Millinghaus led all scorers with 34 points, the highest total through three games of this season’s championship, to go along with eight rebounds and two steals
  • Quan Poindexter and Troy Steward each scored 12 points for the Tigers
  • Victor Dukes and Percell Washington each scored 20 points and combined for 28 rebounds to lead Central Baptist
  • Ashford Golden chipped in with 10 points and three assists for the Mustangs


  • Georgetown finished the first half on an 11-2 run over 4:28 to take a 39-29 halftime lead
  • The Tigers also scored the first two field goals after the break to take the biggest lead of the game, 44-29, and led again by 15 points at the 16:55 mark
  • Central Baptist chipped away at the deficit and got as close as two points (65-63) with 5:56 remaining
  • Georgetown made seven free throws in the final four minutes and finished the game with a 26-15 advantage at the free throw line
  • Shadell Millinghaus scored the final basket of the game with 21 seconds left after Central Baptist closed to within three


  • Georgetown head coach Chris Briggs – “You’ve got to have the little things. It is March. I’m proud of us for sticking it out down the stretch. We were able to tough it out down the stretch.”
  • Central Baptist head coach Chris Wright – “I thought we battled extremely hard and turned the ball over too many times and gave up too many points in transition. This is not the way we wanted our season to end, but I couldn’t be prouder of a group of men.”


  • Georgetown forced 18 turnovers, leading to 21 points off takeaways
  • Central Baptist claimed a 46-34 advantage on the glass and scored 23 second chance points


The Tigers qualified for the national championship for the 27th-straight season and 37th time overall, receiving an at-large berth … Georgetown improved to 3-0 all-time in the national championship against teams from the American Midwest Conference … The Tigers improved to 7-5 this season against teams part of this season’s event … The Tigers’ win was its 67th all-time in the national championship, most for any program.

Central Baptist

The Mustangs finished the season losing four of five games after compiling a 14-game winning streak … Central Baptist earned its first-ever berth into the national championship as an at-large qualifier … The Mustangs collected 21 offensive rebounds, their sixth game this season with at least 20 rebounds on the offensive glass … Central Baptist is the 14th team from the state of Arkansas to appear in the national championship.
