Cumberland Overpowers Coastal Georgia, 59-47

FRANKFORT, Ky. - (Box Score) Cumberland (Tenn.) advanced to the second round of the 2013 Division I Women's Basketball National Championship after claiming a 59-47 win over Coastal Georgia. The Bulldogs, who are making their first appearance at the championship since 2007, will play the winner of Benedictine (Kan.)/Bethel (Tenn.) at the Frankfort Convention Center on Friday at 9:45 p.m. EDT.

Forward Jessica Pace, who led all scorers with 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting, asserted herself early in the Cumberland offense, scoring four of the Bulldogs' initial eight points as they jumped out to an 8-2 lead to start the game. Cumberland (31-2) enjoyed a 5-to-7 point lead for a majority of the period.

The Bulldogs, who held a 26-21 lead at the half, held Coastal Georgia to only 8-of-25 shooting in the first half, including a 0-for-4 effort from beyond the arc. Cumberland's Biannica Tye led all scorers in the first half with eight points.

Coastal Georgia cut the deficit to one twice in the second half, however both times Cumberland responded, including a 7-0 run that spanned three minutes early in the period. The Bulldogs claimed their first double-digit lead of the game when Pace scored off an assist by London Elie to make it 43-33 with seven minutes remaining.

The Mariners would pull within six, 43-37, with 5:45 on the clock, but again Cumberland tightened its defense, holding Coastal Georgia to only two field goals the rest of the way.

Cumberland finished the game shooting 42.6 percent (26-of-61) from the field. Additionally, the Bulldogs forced 20 Coastal Georgia turnovers while committing only 10 of their own.

Coastal Georgia was led in scoring by Janele Tucker, who came off the bench to score 10 points.

Coastal Georgia, who is in its second year and making its first appearance at the national championship, ends its season with a 24-9 record.
