NATCHITOCHES, La. – The Outdoor Track & Field season is set to wrap up with the Bearkats set to travel to Natchitoches Louisiana for the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships. The competition will start on Friday and run through Sunday.

The men’s team is looking for a third straight title while the women are aiming to repeat as champions. If the women can repeat it will break a pattern of alternating the title between themselves and Stephen F. Austin. The women have won three of the last five SLC Outdoor championships since 2014.

This outdoor season has proven to be a very successful one. The men’s team performed better than expected by the 2019 D-1 Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Rating Index’s standards. The Bearkats were ranked No. 66 in the preseason rankings but spent the whole season ranked in the 30s, topping out at No. 30 during week four.

Heading into the Southland Championships the men’s team is ranked 38th in the nation, 7th in the region and 2nd in the conference.

The women head into the competition 175th in the nation, 20th in the region and 6th in the conference.

Some of the notable athletes to keep an eye on during the SLC Outdoor Championships are Jo’vaughn Martin, Chris Jefferson, Fabian McCall, Clayton Fritsch, Aaron Akens, Halie Daniel and Lauryn Caldwell.

Fritsch and Caldwell are both coming off competitions in which they both set new school records in their respective events. Fritsch in the pole vault and Caldwell in the hammer throw. Daniel currently holds the second-best throw in the Southland conference in the shot put with a throw of 16.00m.

Martin and Jefferson hold the second and third spots in the 100m dash. The two also hold the first and second spots in the 200m dash. McCall sits at the top of the conference with his 110m hurdle time (13.94) and Akens leads the pack in the hammer throw with a conference-leading throw of 65.75m.

Look for these athletes and more to help contribute to another championship for Sam Houston State this weekend.
