AUSTIN – The Sam Houston men’s golf did exactly what head coach Brandt Kieschnick wanted on the final day. They played loose and posted their best round of the week at the NCAA Golf Austin Regional.

The Kats shot a 291 on Wednesday at UT Golf Club, playing the course 11 shots better than their previous best round.

“I thought we had a pretty good meeting with the team last night and just wanted to come out and play the best we can,” Kieschnick said. “We wanted to see if we could pass some teams today, and I’m not sure if that happened or not, but I’m proud of the way they played.”

As a team, the Kats were still under par after 13 holes, before finishing 7-over for the day.

Noah Steele finished the day with a 1-under round of 70, the only under par round of the tournament for the Bearkats. Steele started his day on No. 10 and birdied two of his first five holes. A birdie on No. 4 got him to 3-under for the day. But back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 6 and 7 got him back to 1-under. Steele finished 8-over for the tournament and in a tie for 34th place.

Freshman Jack Randle put together an even par round of 71 on the day. He opened his day with a birdie and made the turn at even par. He birdied No. 3 to get to 1-under. After a bogey on No. 5 he closed the round with four straight pars. Randle finished the tournament at 16-over and was 57th overall.

William Holcomb opened his round with eight straight pars before a bogey on No. 9. Birdies on Nos. 1 and 4 got him back to 1-under. A bogey on No. 6 and a double bogey to finish his round put him at 2-over 73 for the day. Holcomb finished the tournament tied for 38th

Freshman Luis Carrera started the day 1-under through four holes before shooting a 77 and a finished 64th. Levi Valadez closed his round with back to back birdies to shoot an 81.
