HUNTSVILLE - On the verge of the program’s second appearance in an NCAA Regional, Sam Houston State softball coach Garrett Valis announced the signing of Temple College’s Madilyn Weatherly for the 2020 season.

Valis, who is in his first season at the helm of the Bearkats, has guided Sam Houston State (34-21) to the team’s first Southland Conference regular-season championship since 1993 after going 22-5 in SLC action and the school’s first league tournament title in more than a decade with a perfect 3-0 run in Natchitoches, Louisiana May 8-10.

The Bearkats will play in the Austin Regional of the NCAA Tournament this weekend at the University of Texas’ Charline McCombs Field.

As a sophomore at Temple College, Weatherly is having a stellar season for the Leopards. The first-team North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference All-Region V North selection is batting .390 in 51 games at first base with 14 home runs and 79 runs batted in.

She also has hit 16 doubles, scored 44 runs and is slugging .726. Weatherly had a big hand in leading Temple back to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Tournament May 22-25 with two hits, including an RBI double in the Region V North Conference Tournament final, and a grand slam and two-run double in the semifinals.

“We are excited to add Madilyn to our program for the upcoming season,” Valis said. “She is a corner infielder who hits for power from the left side, so we feel she will be able to add some pop and versatility to our lineup. She has had an extremely successful career to this point at Temple College, performed well on a national stage and will fit well into our culture.”

Weatherly was the Region V North Conference Player of the Year in 2018 to lead Temple to the NJCAA DI national championship in 2018. The National Fastpitch Coaches Association third-team All-American hit .461 with 10 home runs, 16 doubles and 36 RBIs as a freshman in 42 games.
