HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State football team will host its annual spring game on Friday, highlighting its spring practice in advance of the 2019 season.
The game will be held at Bowers Stadium at 7:00 p.m. on Friday in a practice format that will be without a scoring system. Head coach K.C. Keeler says it has been a physical spring season and the Bearkats want to be sure to come out of it all as healthy as possible.
“We wanted it to be a physical spring and it has been, but with that we have some guys banged up,” Keeler said. “Going into Friday we will be without four of our projected top-five guys on both sides of the line and down some skill guys too. We just want to be smart about how we handle that, and it’s a great chance for other guys to get reps and show what they can do.”
The game will not feature a scoring system, but rather multiple situations and scenarios such as red zone, 2-minute drill, third downs and special teams in an overall evening scheduled for approximately 90 minutes.
The team will also be hosting a golf outing earlier in the day at Raven Nest Golf Club in Huntsville, providing fans and supporters an opportunity to mingle and interact with players and coaches prior to the start of the game.
Registration for the golf event begins at 10:00 a.m. at the Raven Nest clubhouse, leading up to an 11:30 a.m. shotgun start on the 18-hole course.
The event carries a $100 entry fee per participant and includes 18 holes of golf, an SHSU Football polo, lunch and a BBQ dinner prior to the Spring Game at Bowers Stadium.
“We have so much going on that the game is just a small part of it,” Keeler said. “We will have all of our incoming signees, as well as a number of former players, so it’s a great chance for us to bring together the past, present and future of Bearkat football all in one place for a weekend.”
Those interested in taking part in the golf outing are encouraged to contact Nick Olsson at (936) 294-2701 or email@example.com. Fans can also elect to only participate in the BBQ prior to the game for $10.
The BBQ dinner will be held in the north lot outside of Bowers Stadium at 5:30 p.m.
