Norfolk, Va. (Nov. 21. 2019) --- Delaware State has landed three players on the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Volleyball All-Rookie Team, in voting by league head coaches and sports information representatives announced this week.

Hornet middle blocker Sydney Lewis (Bowie, Md.), along with outside hitters Anadys Chemelis Valentin (Vega Baja, P.R.) and Jordan Vang (Ontario, Can) are among the seven all-rookie team honorees.

Lewis ranked fourth in the MEAC, and tops among freshman, with a .321 hitting percentage, recording 167 kills on 346 attacks during the 2019 regular season.   She posted the top two hitting performances in the league among players with at least 12 kills in a match this season.

On Sep. 11 at St. Peter’s, Lewis had 22 winners and just one error for a .724 percentage in the contest. She recorded a .667 hitting percentage at Maryland-Eastern Shore on Nov. 1, notching 12 kills without an error on 18 attempts.

Chemelis Valentin was tops on the Hornets and eighth in the MEAC in kills at 2.80 per set, tallying 291 kills in 104 sets this season. She was the first MEAC Rookie of the Week honoree this season, selected for the award on Sep. 2, addition to ranking second on the team in aces (38) and digs (161).

A two-time MEAC Rookie-of-the-Week selection, Vang was second on the Hornets in kills (237) and kills per set (2.52) this season.

The trio helped lead Delaware State to its best season in nine years. Under first-year head coach Bruce Atkinson, the Hornets’ 12 wins this season (12-18) were the most by the team since posting an 18-12 mark in 2010. DSU had just 12 wins combined in the previous six seasons.

The Hornets’ seven MEAC wins this year were also the most by the team since tallying eight (8-2) in  2010. In addition, DSU had a three-game win streak this season, its longest in nine years.

Lewis, Chemelis Valentin and Vang were among 11 freshmen on the 2019 Delaware State squad, which graduated just one player.
