Dover, Del. (Nov. 30, 2019) --- Tyrell Gumbs-Frater led five Coastal Carolina double-figure scorers with a game-high 26 points in the Chanticleers’ 92-77 victory over Delaware State in Memorial Hall this evening. Coastal snapped a two-game losing streak to even its season record at 4-4, while the Hornets fell to 1-8.
Gumbs-Frater was nine-for-15 from the field, including eight-of-10 on three-point shots. Keishawn Brewton added 19 points, while Tommy Burton contributed 15 points (9-12 FT) and 10 rebounds for the Chanticleers.
The Coastal victory overshadowed two 20-point performances for Delaware State.
Lance Singh (jr.) came off the bench to lead the Hornets with a season-best 26 points, highlighted by six-of-nine three-point shooting, while John Crosby added 22 points (11-12 FT) for DSU. Crosby has surpassed the 20-point mark in four of the Hornets’ nine games this season.
Singh has 10 three-point field goals in the last two games and leads the team with 21 for the season.
Coastal Carolina started quickly, opening up a 17-4 lead on an inside basket by Burton with 13:49 left in the first half.
Delaware State responded with a 22-8 run, and took its first lead, 26-25, when Ronald Lucas hit two free throws at the 8:04 mark of the first half. Singh came off the bench to key the rally by scoring 10 points on four-of-five shooting from the field, including two three-pointers. He gave the Hornets a 28-25 lead on a fast break basket with 7:06 to go before halftime.
DSU led 30-27 before Coastal Carolina responded with another rally.
The Chanticleers scored 16 straight points, and pulled ahead 43-30 on two free throws by DeVante Jones with 3:28 left in the half. Gumbs-Frater scored six points on two three-pointers and Brewton added five points to key the Chanticleers’ spurt.
Coastal Carolina led 47-35 at the half.
Delaware State trailed 56-42 before another comeback attempt. The Hornets scored 11 of the next 15 points, and pulled to within 60-53 after Crosby hit two at the line with 12:08 left to play.
DSU could get no closer and trailed by as many as 20 points in the second half.
Jones also recorded a double-double for Coastal, tallying 10 points and topping all players with 12 rebounds.
Delaware State was 22-for-63 from the field (34.9%), including nine-of-29 on three-point shots (31.0%) in the game.
Coastal Carolina shot 46.8% for the game, knocking down 29 of their 62 field goal attempts, including a sizzling 14-of-27 from beyond the arc (51.9% ). The bigger Chanticleers held a huge edge in rebounding 55-32.
The Hornets return to action on Dec. 4 with a home game against Loyola (Md.). Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
