WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The UNCG volleyball team traveled up I-40 on Friday evening to take part in a pair of scrimmages against Wake Forest and High Point as part of their 2019 spring season.

The Spartans suffered a 25-21, 25-18 setback to host Wake Forest and returned to the court for a 25-19, 25-23 setback to High Point.

UNCG continued to focus on its overall offensive play, while perfecting defensive strategies, during the practice leading up to the matches.

“I’m very proud of our team’s overall performance tonight,” said head coach Corey Carlin. “Our main goal in the spring is to build on each competition and we did that, playing better volleyball tonight than we did last weekend.

“Both Wake Forest and High Point are well coached teams so we knew they would provide good challenges for us,” added Carlin. “We fought through significant adversity after being forced to play in an unorthodox rotation most of the night with some players having to play much more than normal or play out of their normal positions for long stretches. There are things we need to clean up before our next competition but our team never backed down at any point and I’m very proud of the competitive fight we showed.”

The Spartans will now have two weeks of practice before concluding the spring slate at home on Saturday, April 13. The UNCG Tournament field so far includes N.C. Central, N.C. A&T, Campbell, Hampton, Gardner-Webb, UNC Wilmington, Queens College, Winston-Salem State, Montreat College, Francis Marion, UNC-Pembroke and Lenior-Rhyne.
