GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG volleyball team announced its spring schedule on Friday, March 8, which includes four dates and a home tournament that is set to take place on Saturday, April 13 at Fleming Gymnasium.

The Spartans, who were 13-16 overall and 7-9 in Southern Conference action in the 2018 slate, won three of their last five matches to close out the campaign.

UNCG is embarking on its 50th year of the volleyball program in 2019 and the athletic department will be honoring past members of the program throughout the course of the season. This collaboration will take place on Oct. 18 and 19. Former student-athletes, coaches and staff from the Spartan volleyball family are encouraged to be in attendance both days.

The 2019 spring season begins on Saturday, March 16 at Elon. Among the teams set to compete at the Elon Tournament are Catawba, Catawba Valley Community College, N.C. A&T, UNCG and host Elon. UNCG and the Phoenix have a longstanding tradition that dates back to their Southern Conference days. The Spartans own a 27-16 lead in the all-time series, however Elon won the most recent meeting on Sept. 16, 2017 by triumphing 3-0.

The following weekend, the Spartans trek to Charlotte to take part in the Carolina Union Volleyball Club College Tournament. There are 14 teams that have committed to playing in Charlotte, including Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Wofford, Davidson, Appalachian State, Charlotte, Western Carolina and High Point.

UNCG will then head up I-40 to Winston-Salem to clash with Wake Forest and High Point on Friday afternoon, March 29. The Demon Deacons and Spartans have met 14 times since the 1980 season with the UNCG claiming five wins in that span, including a 3-1 victory to open up 2018 slate on August 25.

The Spartans have gone head-to-head with High Point on 25 occasions since 1980 with the Panthers leading the all-time series 13-12. UNCG claimed the most recent victory in the series, winning 3-2 on Sept. 15, 2017, one of 12 home wins for the Spartans that season.

"The players have been working hard this spring,” said head coach Corey Carlin. “With only a few starters returning from the past two seasons, the spring competition season will provide valuable match reps and experience for our younger players. Many of our players will need to fill new roles heading into the fall, and that's what this time in the spring is all about; finding out who all will step into larger roles as consistent performers. We've made competitive drive and blocking development our two main points of focus in off-season training so far and I'm definitely looking forward to see how those aspects translate into match play this spring."

After a two-week layoff, the Spartans conclude the spring slate at home on Saturday, April 13. The UNCG Tournament field so far includes N.C. Central, N.C. A&T, Campbell, Hampton, Gardner-Webb, UNC Wilmington, Queens College, Winston-Salem State, Montreat College, Francis Marion, UNC-Pembroke and Lenior-Rhyne.
