GREENSBORO, N.C. – After taking part in 12 days of spring practice, the UNCG volleyball team participated in their first spring scrimmage over the weekend in Charlotte, N.C., competing against South Carolina, Wingate, Davidson and Charlotte.

The Spartans, who didn’t take part in Elon Tournament on March 16th in an effort to recover from injuries, saw their first weekend of action at the Carolina Union Volleyball Club College Tournament. There were 14 teams participating in the event including Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Wofford, Davidson, Appalachian State, Charlotte, Western Carolina and High Point.

“During our preseason practice we had several points of emphasis leading up to our matches in Charlotte,” said assistant coach and recruiting coordinator James Goodridge. “I think that we played pretty well with things that we focused on during our practices.”

Among the points of stressed during those practice sessions were varying defensive strategies as well as getting maximum offensive shot selections.

“In our matches in Charlotte, we did tighten up our offense and improve on the overall shot selection,” said Goodridge. “Defensively, we were trying to marry together our discipline, where to go and when to be there, along with channeling our defensive intensity. We are focusing on getting those concepts together so that we can have a more sound defensive attack.”

The Spartans will have an opportunity to refine those facets of their performance when they trek up I-40 on Friday, March 29th to face Wake Forest and High Point.

“We have some very good things that we can build off of following our matches in Charlotte,” said Goodridge. “While it wasn’t a complete performance for our team last weekend, we can improve our offensive and defensive strategies and have a complete match when we host the final spring tournament of the season on April 13th.”
