NORFOLK, Va. - Sophomore Maartje van Rijswijk continued her stellar play scoring two goals and leading No. 20 Old Dominion to a 4-2 Colonial Athletics Association win over VCU Friday evening at the Powhatan Sports Complex.
The win moves the Lady Monarchs (8-9, 5-1 CAA) into sole possession of second-place in the CAA.
Coming off the bench, van Rijswijk has now recorded six goals in the last three games. The sophomore has 11 scores on the season which is second best on the team and tied for fifth in the CAA.
VCU, which got goals from Kelsey Scherrer and Marle van Dessel, falls to 12-5 overall and 4-2 in league play.
Old Dominion raced out to an early lead as Paige Clutter posted her fourth goal of the season after collecting and scoring off a rebounded Hatch penalty corner shot that was saved.
Van Rijswijk netted her first of two goals at the 23:43 mark of the opening half as she dribbled into the circle and blasted a high shot that ricocheted off the post and in to put ODU up 2-0.
The Rams fought back and scored a penalty corner goal before halftime and Scherrer ran down a loose ball and beat the Lady Monarch goalkeeper to tie the game exactly two minutes into the second stanza. With the game tied, ODU began to apply pressure and it paid off when van Rijswijk tapped in a Kern shot to give the Lady Monarchs the lead back in the 51st minute.
Old Dominion added an insurance goal with seven minutes remaining when Danielle Clutter handled a feed from Hatch and scored from the right side of the cage.
Old Dominion led handedly in both shots (16-7) and penalty corners (8-3).
The Lady Monarchs are next in action on Sunday against CAA rival James Madison. The contest is set to get underway at 1 p.m. at the Powhatan Sports Complex.
