Lady Monarchs Get Past Delaware, 4-3, in CAA Play

NORFOLK, Va. -- The Lady Monarchs bounced back after a one-point loss to CAA rival Georgia State in their last match with a one-point win of their own over CAA foe Delaware on Wednesday. Old Dominion squeaked past the Fightin' Blue Hens, 4-3, improving to 14-7 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

Junior Marija Citic (Belgrade, Serbia) paired with freshman Juliana Pires (Porto Alegre, Brazil) for a win at No. 3 doubles for Old Dominion, but the Lady Monarchs would fall at No. 1 and No. 2 for a quick 1-0 deficit as Delaware took the doubles point. Delaware's Elena Berry and Montse Ripoll upset the 67th ranked tandem of Nadine Fahoum and Joanna Dobrowolska at No. 1 doubles, 8-6, in the process.

In singles action, Fahoum, ranked 21st in the nation, and Dobrowolska would each earn a bounce-back wins. Fahoum dropped Megan Doran, 6-3, 6-3 at the top spot, improving to 19-2 in dual action at No. 1 singles and 34-5 overall this season. Dobrowolska also earned a straight set win at No. 2, going 6-2, 6-1 over Berry.

Delaware answered with wins at No. 3 and 5, but the Lady Monarchs sealed the win with 6-1, 6-0 wins at No. 4 and 6. Diana Ivanova dropped Samantha Carnall at No. 4, giving her 15 dual wins for the season, second on the team. Citic added her win at No. 6, her fourth in the last five matches.

Old Dominion has just two matches left this season, including the regular season finale against William & Mary on April 7 after traveling to Marshall for a match on Friday, April 2. The CAA Championship will begin on April 15 at the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center on the campus of ODU.
