Fairfax, Va. - Rowing in just their third event as a varsity program, the Lady Monarchs of Old Dominion University continued to show promise with three top 10 finishes at the Head of the Occoquan Saturday in Fairfax, Va.

In the Women's Collegiate Novice 8+ the Lady Monarchs captured third and fourth respectively in the 31-team field, showing exceptional balance with their two freshmen boats. The third place boat finished with a time of 18:49.52, while the fourth place crew was less than a second behind with an 18:49.56. ODU finished just behind more experienced boats from Navy and Delaware.

ODU managed a seventh place effort in the Women's Collegiate 4+ with a time of 19:38.61, less than a minute behind George Washington's winning time of 18:52.86. The field of 28 was highly contested with the top seven boats finishing less than a minute apart.

"Today was an important day for us as a team," added ODU head coach Heather Weisel. "We'll have many firsts this year, but while we hoped to do well on our first road trip with the entire squad, we primarily focused on applying everything we've learned so far and it paid off. Navy and Delaware both have great programs and it's exciting to see how close we came to matching their times this early in the year. The Varsity 4 finished less than a minute out of first with a freshman stroking the boat, which is a huge confidence boost for them. We are all looking forward to our next challenge in Charlottesville on the 16th."

The Lady Monarchs will conclude the fall portion of their schedule with the Rivanna Romp in Charlottesville on Nov. 16.
