NORFOLK, VA (Feb. 5) - Old Dominion's men's swimming and diving team closed out the regular season in dramatic fashion, coming back from an 18 point deficit to defeat UMBC, 124-114. With the win, the Monarchs finish the 1999-2000 season at 10-2 overall.

The Retrievers jumped out to the early lead, capturing the 400 medley relay, 200 free, 50 free and 200 IM, while the Monarchs were only able to win the 1650 free, and were down 38-54 going into the men's one meter dive.

Senior diver Kevin Harrison (Bethpage, NY) won the men's diving competition for the Monarchs to move the team closer, 52-58. However, UMBC scored first-place victories in the 200 fly and 100 free to move out to its largest lead of the day, 83-65.

Monarch freshman John Wall (Hoover, AL) then won the 200 back (1:53.90) and Monarch senior Jimmy Sullivan (West Palm Beach, FL) won the 500 free (4:35.77) to give ODU its first lead of the day, 94-92, going into the final diving event.

Harrison won the three-meter dive with a NCAA Deep Zone qualifying score of 317.93 to put the Monarchs up 107-95, but the Retriever's Kevin Goh won the 200 breast to pull UMBC back to within one point going into the final event, the 400 free relay.

Old Dominion's freestyle relay team of Matt Morrisette (Virginia Beach, VA), Greg Cardillo (Providence, RI), Sullivan and John Sax (Memphis, TN) won the 400 free relay with a time of 3:08.80 to secure the come-from-behind victory over the feisty UMBC squad.

The Monarchs return to action Feb. 23-26, as they seek to obtain their second CAA crown in three years at the CAA Championships in Fairfax, VA.
