From The Desk Of Joe Hull: Charleston Basketball Comes Roaring Back
Dear Cougar Fans,
The excitement surrounding Charleston Basketball is real. CofC will have its best team in years. The Cougars are clearly a contender to win the CAA next season. Our coaches and players can hardly wait to get started on their quest.
One reason for the excitement is that all five starters, plus other key players, return. The team has established that it plays hard, plays great defense and competes with a grit and determination embodied by its head coach.
The team started three freshmen, a sophomore and a junior. Marquise Pointer and Jarrell Brantley made the CAA All-Rookie Team with Brantley earning Rookie of the Year honors. Cameron Johnson and Payton Hulsey were named to the CAA All-Defensive Team.
Another reason for the excitement is the return of injured teammates. Our three most dynamic scorers missed the 2015-16 season due to injuries. Their absence gave other teammates a chance to shine. The return of Joe Chealey, who averaged 12 points per game as a sophomore, and freshman Grant Riller should give our team a terrific boost in all ways, but particularly offensively.
Our recruiting class also has many who follow the Cougars very excited. We have four outstanding signees, headlined by Chevez Goodwin and Jaylen McManus. This class is big, fast and can shoot.
And, for next season, the schedule looks fun and favorable. We will play in the ESPN Charleston Classic, featuring CofC and defending national champion Villanova, at TD Arena and the CAA Men’s Basketball Championship tourney will be held at the North Charleston Coliseum.
All in all, it looks like the Cougars are back!
