Encinas, Glover Capture Coveted ExCEL Award
CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston student-athletes Rodrigo Encinas and RoShani Glover received high honor Wednesday, as the two were named the male and female recipients for the ExCEL Award for Outstanding Student-Athletes of the Year.
Now in its 11th year, the ExCEL Awards Program is designed to honor students, faculty, staff and neighbors (individuals, agencies or companies) for their dedication to excellence displayed through teaching, athleticism, student leadership, departmental support, or commitment to the community.
Encinas, a junior on the men’s tennis team out of Santiago, Chile, has had an outstanding year for the Cougars who are 12-5 thus far this season. The junior has posted a 12-4 record in singles action this year, the majority of which has come in the third flight. In doubles, 16 of his 17 matches have come alongside top-flight partner Juan Estevarena, where the two are ranked No. 66 in the country with a 13-3 record on the year. Encinas has won eight singles matches in a row, and has won eight of his last nine doubles matches.
Glover, a senior track and field standout from Summerville, S.C., is in the middle of an outstanding campaign in the horizontal jumps for the Cougars. Glover broke the indoor record in the long jump back in late January with a distance of 5.59m up at the Bob Pollock Invitational in Clemson. The senior then went on to earn a trip to the ECAC Championships in Boston, Mass. for her work in the triple jump, where she also set the TJ record with a distance of 12.32m to take fifth. Now midway through the outdoor campaign, Glover has already recorded an outdoor PR in the long jump.
Track and field competes this weekend from Thursday through Saturday at the Florida Relays. Men’s tennis will be back at it Friday at 3 p.m. when they travel north for a matchup with Elon.
