Dordt Holds Off Upset-Minded Cal Maritime

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. - The Dordt (Iowa) Defenders were able to hold off the Cal Maritime Keelhaulers, 63-54, in first round action at the 2012 NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship. It was the first Division II tournament win for the fourth-seeded Defenders. This year's event is being held at the Keeter Gymnasium on the campus of College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Mo.

The Keelhaulers had the early advantage at 9-4, but the Defenders went on a 13-1 run to get up 17-10 with 8:49 left in the first half.  The Defenders built the lead to as many as 13 in the first half before going into the break, up 32-22.

Cal Maritime took the momentum back when it went on an 8-0 run to start the half.  The Keelhaulers were able to tie the game at 46-46 on a Ty Houghton 3-point basket with 8:19 left and the score was tied again two other times. But the California Pacific Conference champion was never able to take the lead.

The Defenders led 56-54 with 2:32 left in the game and Cliff Warner hit a 3-point basket at the 1:36 mark for a two-possession lead and Dordt sealed it with free throws to advance.

Dordt was 26-for-51 from the floor and 2-for-8 on 3-point shots for 51 percent and 25 percent, respectively.  Cal Maritime was 22-for-62 from the floor and 6-for-24 on 3-point tries for 35.5 percent and 25 percent.  Dordt took advantage of 13 trips to the free throw line for nine makes while the Keelhaulers were 4-for-8.  Dordt had a significant 43-20 rebounding advantage but was forced into 21 turnovers, while the Keelhaulers had seven.

Dordt was paced by Trevor Wolterstorff's 19 points and ten rebounds while Cliff Warner had 15 points and six rebounds with three assists.  Jordan Vogel completed the double digit scorers with 12 points with seven rebounds. 

Cal Maritime was led by Josh Greenwell with 16 and Ty Houghton added 13.  The Keelhaulers end the season with a 21-10 record and their 14-game winning streak was snapped.

Dordt takes a 29-4 record into a second round game with Warner Pacific (Ore.) on Friday at 8:30 a.m. CST.  The Knights are 24-8 and were overtime winners over 13th-seed Indiana Wesleyan earlier today.
