Montana State-Northern (28-5) trailed the Blue Raiders for the first 12 minutes of the first half, but stormed-back in the final eight minutes. The Skylights rattled-off a 15-3 run to end the half with a 30-18 advantage.
A’jha Edwards, the senior post player for Montana State-Northern, dominated in the first half and led her team to the halftime advantage. The Sierra Vista, Ariz., native posted 16 points in the opening 20 minutes, and tied her season average.
Lindsey Wilson struggled to find its rhythm in the first half and shot just 15 percent in the opening 20 minutes. The Blue Raiders, however, made adjustments after the half. Chanel Roberts led the team with nine, second-half points and LWC improved to 32 percent shooting from the floor, but were unable to crawl out of its deficit as the Skylights’ shooting also improved as the game continued.
Montana State-Northern’s Edwards finished her night with a double-double. She pulled-down 16 boards and posted 25 points on the night to lead her team to the first round win.
Natalee Faupel also had a solid game for the Skylights. The sophomore recorded 12 points on Wednesday and rounded-out the scorers in double-digits for Montana State-Northern.
Chanel Roberts led the Blue Raiders with 18 points and six rebounds.
As a team, the Skylights recorded five blocks in the game and forced 17 Lindsey Wilson turnovers.
With the win, Montana State-Northern will advance to the round of 16 to play the winner of No. 2-seed Vanguard (Calif.) and Southern-New Orleans (La.) on Friday at 2:15 p.m. CST.
