CHARLOTTE, N.C. –
Charlotte head cross country coach Alex Gibby
has announced an eight-meet slate for his 49ers men’s and women’s squads this fall, including two locally. The Niners will also serve as the host institution for the Conference USA Championships the final weekend of October.
“We have set up our schedule to prepare for our championship competitions in late October and November,” Gibby said.
The campaign gets underway Sept. 2 with the teams playing host to the Charlotte Preview at Frank Liske Park in nearby Concord. The meet will serve as a prelude to the league championships race, which will take place on the same course.
The 49ers then take two weeks off before returning to action Sept. 16 in Williamsburg, Virginia, at the William & Mary Invitational. The month concludes with Charlotte heading back to Commonwealth for the Lou Onesty Invitational in Charlottesville, Virginia.
The Niners will run one more time before the league meet, an Oct. 15 trip to University Park, Pennsylvania, for the Penn State Open.
“Between the meet at Virginia at the end of September and our trip to Penn State, we will compete against many of the best teams in the country.”
Charlotte will then play host to the Conference USA Championships Oct. 29 at Frank Liske Park. It marks the second time in school history the 49ers will play host to the annual meet as a Conference USA member, and first since 1999, when the Niners welcomed only the men’s programs to town.
“We are definitely excited to play host to the Conference USA Championships at Frank Liske. It’s a great venue for cross country. We will host a small preview meet in early September to give our course a test run. Unfortunately, it means we will not run the Charlotte Invitational in 2016 but the meet will return in the future.”
The 49ers will then compete in the adidas 3-Stripe Invitational Nov. 5 in Raleigh to conclude their regular season.
The NCAA Southeast Regional is slated for Nov. 11 back in Charlottesville, while the NCAA Championships are set for eight days later, Nov. 19, in Terre Haute, Indiana, and hosted by Indiana State. 2016 Charlotte Cross Country Schedule Sept. 2—Charlotte Preview—Concord, N.C.
