IRVING, Texas – Conference USA officials announced Tuesday afternoon that Charlotte will serve as the host institution for the 2016 league championships. The 49ers will play host to the meet October 29 at Frank Liske Park in nearby Concord and it will lead off the conference championships as the first event of the 2016-17 calendar year.
It will mark the second time in school history Charlotte will play host to the annual meet as a Conference USA member. The last time the event was held in the Queen City was in 1999, during the Niners’ first tenure in the conference when Charlotte welcomed only the men’s programs to town. C-USA held two separate championships that year with the Niners placing third. Champion Southern Miss later had to vacate its title.
The 49ers served as the host institution in 2008 and 2011 with both men’s and women’s programs represented during their stint in the Atlantic 10.
Charlotte placed fifth in both men’s and women’s events during last year’s championships, held at Spero Kereiakes Park in Bowling Green, Ky.
