CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The 49er men and women’s cross country programs turned in another strong showing at the William & Mary Invitational in Williamsburg, Va.
"It was another good weekend, with a complete team effort," head coach Alex Gibby said. "This is a big step up from where the women were at this time last year. It's going to be interesting how things progress next week when they run a 6K at our home meet."
"On the men's side, we ran a middle-distance group, and there are some things of course that we would like to get better on with a longer distance. But overall, it was a very successful weekend on both sides."
Casin-Silva clocked in at 18:38.14, with Richards shortly behind her at 18:48.36. Each had help in securing the 49ers second-place finish, with four more veterans taking spots in the Top 15: Tiffany Lang (19:01.31- 8th), Rachel Miller (19:03.49- 9th), Ashleigh Handchen (19:06.83-11th), and Taylor Carcella (19:15.14-12th).
Rounding out the women’s squad was redshirt freshman Erin Nelson, who came in 19th with a 19:36.32 time, senior Caragh MacDermott, who narrowly missed the Top 20, coming in 22nd at 19:59.90, and classmate Lauren Pollard, who took 35th on a 21:14.70 clip.
The men took third place on a 6K run with 90 points with the top finisher in senior Nicholas Rotz, who finished in 15th place at 19:51.98. Classmate Carl Walton wasn’t far behind, turning in a 20:25.89 time in 24th place.
Redshirt freshman Josh Barrett, competing in his first meet of the season, was next to finish, coming in 27th with a 20:29.77 time. Adam Huff and Kent Mann rounded out the men’s fleet, coming in 38th and 40th, respectively.
The 49ers return to their home course at McAlpine Park for the Charlotte Invitational on Sept. 25.
