CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The 49ers men’s and women’s cross country programs opened their 2015 seasons at the Virginia Duals in Charlottesville, Va., on Wednesday.
Each team ran in a 4000 meter event at Panorama Farms, the future site of the NCAA Southeast Regional in November.
“We had a shortened warm-up, but we ran really well in spite of that,” coach Alex Gibby said. “We are a lot further along at this point in the year than we were last year. The entire team did a good job for our first race out.”
The Niners made a strong showing, finishing as the top team on the women’s side (20 points) and coming in second in the men’s event with 41 points. A fleet of top-ten finishes from both sides added to Richards’ and Nobles performances.
On the men’s squad, veterans Ben Sterett, Michael Tamayo, and Nicholas Rotz finished at sixth, eighth, and ninth, respectively. On the women’s front, junior Carolina Casin-Silva was the next top performer, finishing at sixth, with senior Tiffany Lang, freshman Caroline Sang, and senior Caragh MacDermott, coming in at seventh, eighth, and ninth.
Rounding out the men’s team were sophomore Daniel Beamer, who posted a time of 12:49 and 14th place finish, and senior Zach Greth, who ran his first race since 2013, after redshirting last season.
All but one of the women earned top 20 finishes, with Taylor Carcella, Erin Nelson, Ashleigh Handchen, and Rachel Miller, finishing 15th- 18th. Lauren Pollard ended the day in 27th to round out the women's event.
The 48ers will head back to the Old Dominion State on Friday, Sept. 18, when the squads will run in the William and Mary Invitational in Williamsburg, Va.
