CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte softball continues to garner postseason recognition, as the duo of Haley Pace and Lexi Betancourt were announced as CoSIDA Academic Third Team All-Americans Thursday afternoon. They are the only two representatives from Conference USA.
The pair becomes just the second and third members of the program to earn the title, after first baseman Tiffany Howard in 1998 and were also both members of the elite 12-member C-USA All-Academic Team this season.
They are numbers 42 and 43 to claim the Academic All-American title amongst all Charlotte Athletics, and it is the sixth time in school history that two members of the same team have earned the distinction.
Betancourt capped her storied career with the 49ers by becoming the all-time wins leader with 72. She also tops the program in games started, innings pitched, and appearances, and leaves Charlotte second in career strikeouts and third in career shutouts.
A native of Garner, N.C., she ranked second in the league in strikeouts looking, third in strikeouts and wins, and sixth in both opponent's batting average and ERA. She recorded eight or more Ks in nine games this season, including four double digit strikeout performances, such as a two-hit, 11 K shutout against former league rival East Carolina. That feat helped garner her C-USA Co Pitcher of the Week honors in late February. Betancourt took a no-hitter into at least the fifth inning a total of seven times this season, including coming four outs away against UNCG in late April and came a walk and hit away from a perfect game against Western Carolina in March.
The 2016 Preseason All-C-USA selection graduated last May Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Exercise Science, and carries a 4.0 as she pursues her Master's in Kinesiology. Upon finishing graduate school, she plans to attend medical school.
Pace presents a perfect 4.0 as an accounting major, and led the league this season with 49 RBI. She was named to the NFCA's Second-Team All-Region squad earlier this month.
During the weekend of April 30-May 1, Pace collected an astounding ten RBI across three games where she also scored seven times and slugged two homeruns, one of which was her second career grand slam. She tallied eight RBi during the week of March 8-13, where she also smashed two homers.
The Winston-Salem, N.C. native ranked first on the team in eight offensive categories, and in addition to leading in RBI in C-USA, was tied for first in sac flies, fourth in total bases, tied for eighth in hits, tied for tenth in HRs and doubles, and eleventh in slugging perentage. She was a perfect 7-for-7 in stolen bases, and committed the fewest amount of errors amongst league shortstops. She is currently tied for sixth all-time at Charlotte with 16 homeruns.
Just a sophomore, Pace was recently elected as the 2016-17 Student Athlete Advisory Committee's Vice President.
