CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- After successful showings at the 2016 Conference USA Outdoor Championships, the Charlotte track and field teams continue to earn postseason accolades, as the Niners placed a league-high five on the C-USA All-Academic Teams, the conference announced Friday.
Five athletes is the most for the program in both of its tenures in C-USA.
The distance duo of redshirt senior Zach Greth and sophomore Daniel Beamer were named to the men's squad, while the trio of redshirt senior Taylor Carcella, junior Victoria Merriweather, and sophomore Kristen Williams each made the women's team.
Greth, who was announced as a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection Thursday, is a double major in psychology/sociology and a 3.97 GPA (the highest in the league amongst cross country men) and also spends time volunteering at a local hospital.
Greth hails from Reading, Pa., and was most recently named to the 2015 C-USA All-Academic Team for Cross Country this past fall. He was a member of the 2013 C-USA All-Academic Team in track and field, and is a three-time winner of the C-USA Academic Medal. He has made the Chancellor's, Dean's, and AD's Lists every semester, and the Commissioner's Honor Roll every semester, both during his C-USA and Atlantic 10 Conference tenures.
As a distance runner, Zach focuses on the 5,000 and 10,000m runs. He ran the 10K at the prestigious Penn Relays and was a member of the 4x1500m relay who took tenth at equally prestigious Colonial Relays earlier this spring.
Beamer, a sophomore with a 3.91 GPA in Business, is coming off a C-USA All-Conference Third Team selection in at the XC Championships, and also served as a member of the elite 6-member squad of Cross Country C-USA All-Academic Team. He earned both the C-USA Academic Medal and Comissioner's Honor Roll recognition, as well as being on the Chancellor's, Dean's, and AD's Lists every semester.
The Durham, N.C., native finished seventh at the C-USA Outdoor Championships in the 10K and finished ninth in the 3K Steeplechase. Charlotte and UTEP were the only teams to place more than one athlete on the men's team.
Carcella hails from Downington, Pa., and boasts a 3.40 GPA as a double major in biology and chemistry. She is a three-time silver medalist at the C-USA Championships, and has reached the podium four other times in league finals, including a gold at the 2012 Atlantic 10 Championships. She holds three school records at Charlotte and is a four-time recipient of C-USA Academic Medal.
Taylor placed in the Top Four in every event during her indoor season, and has been a member of the Chancellor's, Dean's, and AD's Lists every semester. She is attending pharmacy school this fall.
Fellow school record-holder Merriweather hails from Greenville, S.C., and most recently took gold in the women's hammer throw at the C-USA Outdoor Championships. She took the silver at the Indoor Championships in the wieght throw, and took bronze in both events last season as a sophomore. Merriweather has qualified for the NCAA East Preliminaries both of her seasons at Charlotte and serves as president of her sorority with a 3.252 GPA as a sociology major.
Just a sophomore, Williams rounds out the women's squad, boasting a 3.89 GPA in Exercise Science. Hailing from Huntersville, N.C., she is coming off a bronze medal, personal record-setting performance in the 400m dash at the C-USA Outdoor Championships, where she took fourth in the same event indoors. Williams has recorded 21 Top Eight finishes in 24 races this school year, including three firsts and three seconds.
Rice also placed five total athletes on the two teams, and Rice and Middle Tennessee also placed three women each.
