Tritons 13th Heading Into Final Round of Stroke Play at NCAA Championships
DANIELS, W.Va. - With the second round of play completed Tuesday, the University of California San Diego is in 13th place at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships on the Cobb Course at the Resort at Glade Springs.
UC San Diego is 8 over par with a 584. The Tritons improved their game by 10 strokes, coming in with a 287 after totaling a 297 in Monday's opening round. However, they fell in the standings as they entered Tuesday tied for 11th.
Junior Justin Woo (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) is the team's leader, tied for 11th place with a 2 under par 142 on the par 72, 7,114-yard layout. Woo rocketed up 14 spots after firing a 69 Tuesday to go along with his 73 Monday.
After Wednesday's third and final round of stroke play, the individual national champion will be crowned. The eight highest-placing teams from the stroke play segment move on to quarterfinal medal play with the top four squads then competing in medal match play semifinals, all on Thursday. The team national champion will be decided Friday in head-to-head medal match play.
Three Florida teams are at the top of the leader board. Barry (566, -10), the top-ranked squad in the nation, shot 16 under par Tuesday to move up seven positions into first. Defending national champion Lynn (569, -7) is second and West Florida (574, -2) is third. Those are the only teams under par thus far.
Dixie State (582, +6) and Florida Southern (582, +6) are tied for eighth, a mere two strokes ahead of UC San Diego for the coveted final advancing position.
Cal State Monterey Bay, which led the 20-team field after Monday's round, shot 8 over Tuesday and dropped into a three-way tie for 10th.
Also playing for the Tritons, junior Adam Navigato (Solana Beach/Torrey Pines HS) (77-68--145) is tied for 30th, junior Hayden Hui (72-75--147) is tied for 44th, junior Jacob Johnson (77-75--152) is tied for 79th, and freshman Elliot Bunyaviroch (75-77--152) is also tied for 79th.
UC San Diego punched its ticket to nationals by placing second of 20 at the West/South Central Regional in Utah. The Tritons are competing at the NCAA Division II Championships for the second time. They finished 15th in 2004.
UC San Diego tees off at 8:25 a.m. Eastern (5:25 a.m. Pacific) Wednesday. The Tritons will be playing with South Carolina Aiken (14th, +11) and Saint Leo (15th, +17).
