DURHAM, N.C. – Senior back Jillian Wolgemuth has been named the first ACC Defensive Player of the Week of the 2019 season after guiding third-ranked Duke to a 2-0 opening weekend.
A team co-captain and a second team National Field Hockey Coaches Association and All-ACC pick in 2018, Wolgemuth was key to the Blue Devils’ defensive success in a pair of wins over top-25 opponents.
After Duke surrendered a goal to ninth-ranked Penn State in the first five minutes of Friday’s 4-1 season-opening victory, Wolgemuth and the defensive unit did not allow another tally for the rest of the weekend, logging 115 minutes without allowing a goal. The defense also notched its first shutout of the 2019 campaign Sunday at 25th-ranked William & Mary, helping to fuel a 4-0 road win.
The Blue Devils did not allow a penalty corner in 60 minutes of action Sunday in Williamsburg, and held both opponents on the weekend to single-digit shot attempts.
Wolgemuth and Duke hit the road this weekend to take part in the fifth B1G/ACC Cup. This year’s tournament will be hosted by Northwestern in Evanston, Ill., with the Blue Devils taking on the Wildcats first Friday at 4:30 p.m. ET. Duke also faces Maryland Sunday in a 12 p.m. ET contest.
