DURHAM, N.C. – Senior Haley Schleicher was honored as the Duke Student-Athlete of the Week Wednesday after helping lead the third-ranked Blue Devils to a pair of victories over ranked opponents on the opening weekend of the 2019 campaign.
Schleicher, a midfielder from Virginia Beach, Va., tallied a career-best two goals Sunday in a 4-0 shutout of 25th-ranked William & Mary to close a 2-0 weekend for Duke. Schleicher scored off of a penalty corner opportunity in the second quarter, with fellow senior Margaux Paolino providing the assist, and successfully converted a penalty stroke near the end of the third quarter.
Schleicher contributed to a combined eight goals in the first two contests of the season and also aided a defensive effort that saw Duke surrender just one tally in the first five minutes of Friday night’s 4-1 victory over ninth-ranked Penn State.
The Blue Devils return to action this weekend at the B1G/ACC Cup in Evanston, Ill. Duke faces 15th-ranked Northwestern Friday at 4:30 p.m. ET and second-ranked Maryland Sunday at 12 p.m. ET from the Wildcats’ Lakeside Field.
