DURHAM, N.C. – Blue Devil captains Alyssa Chillano and Sarah Furey represented the Duke program in the 2017 Victory Sports Tours/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I Senior Game Friday evening in Louisville, Ky. Chillano was tabbed the contest’s MVP as the Victory Sports Tours squad earned a 4-3 victory over the NFHCA Team at the Cardinals’ Trager Stadium.
The Blue Devil standouts were two of 38 student-athletes named participants for the annual contest, held at the site of the 2017 NCAA semifinals and finals.
As two key components of a formidable Duke back line, Chillano and Furey led Duke to a 17-4 record in 2017 and the program’s fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals. The senior duo anchored a defensive unit that posted seven shutouts and which ranked among the best in the country all season in goals against average.
Chillano received first team All-ACC recognition for the second straight year and was selected to the ACC All-Tournament Team after helping to guide head coach Pam Bustin’s squad into the conference semifinals. The Phoenixville, Pa., native rounded out her Duke career ranked 22nd in program history in career points (68) and tied for 20th in career goals (27).
As the Blue Devils’ field captain, Furey led a squad that reached the 17-win mark for the second time in the past five seasons. She started all 21 contests on Duke’s back line and started 82 of 82 contests played over her four seasons in Durham. The Mt. Laurel, N.J., native wrapped up her collegiate career with two assists for two points and six defensive saves.
