DURHAM, N.C. – Following the season opening weekend on the road in Charleston, S.C., the Blue Devils return to Durham to host Charlotte Tuesday, Sept. 3 for a 6:30 p.m., contest in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Duke holds a dominant 13-1 series record and have won four straight contests. In their last meeting at a neutral site in 2011, the Blue Devils came away with a 3-1 victory. Under head coach Jolene Nagel, Duke is 4-0.
Charlotte began the year taking their own title defending home court successfully with a 3-0 showing last weekend. The 49ers as a team hit a solid .244 on the weekend racking up 141 kills averaging 12.8/set. On defense, 198 digs and 35 blocks helped coax the opposition into a whopping 93 attack errors on the weekend. Five newcomers to the 49ers roster got some playing time during opening weekend with freshman setter Annika Wetterstrom seeing action in all 11 sets averaging 4.18 assists/set with 46 total. Lana Strejcek and Nalani Lyde each playing in 10 of 11 sets while rookies Amani McArthur and Cailin White gained some court time as well. The five combined for 31 kills, 37 digs and 19 total blocks.
Sophomores Mackenzie Cole and Ade Owokoniran were selected to the College of Charleston Classic All-Tournament Team following their performance over the weekend in Charleston. As Duke’s libero, Cole picked up 29 digs and a 4.14 dig-per-set percentage against Michigan State and No. 1 Stanford. Outside hitter Owokoniran tallied 31 kills with a .253 hitting percentage and averaged 4.43 kills per set in the first match of the 2019 season.
Following Tuesday’s match, Duke will remain home to host the Duke Invitational Sept. 6-7 in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
