DURHAM, N.C. – The nation’s top player will be calling Durham home for the next four years, as Sophie Jones was named the 2018-19 Gatorade National Girls Soccer Player of the Year.
The honor recognizes Jones, who was tabbed the 2018-19 Gatorade California Girls Soccer Player of the Year last week, as the nation’s top high school player in the sport.
Jones led Menlo School to a 20-2-2 record and the Central Coast Section Division I sectional tournament title in her final season. The midfielder recorded 18 goals and 16 assists despite missing the final two contests of the season while training with the U.S. Soccer U-20 Women’s National Team. Also named the 2018 United Soccer Coaches Youth Girls National Player of the Year thanks to her shining performance with her club team, Jones starred on the U.S. squad that participated in the 2018 FIFA U-17 World cup in Uruguay.
A native of Menlo Park, Calif., Jones headlines Duke’s fifth-ranked incoming class, marking the eighth-straight year that head coach Robbie Church and the Blue Devils have reeled in a top 10 recruiting squad. The eight-member group showcases six players ranked in TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Top 150, including five inside the top 75.
The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually showcases athletes who display outstanding athletic and academic excellence, along with exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. The program recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. From the 12 national winners, one male and one female athlete are each named Gatorade High School Athlete of the Year. In all, 607 athletes are honored each year.
