DURHAM, N.C. – As recent Duke graduate Virginia Elena Carta gets set to compete in the ShopRite LPGA Classic presented by Acer June 7-9 on a sponsor exemption, she will have a Blue Devil teammate on the bag this week as rising sophomore Gina Kim will caddy for the 2016 NCAA Individual Champion.
Kim is coming off an impressive couple of weeks of golf helping lead Duke to the NCAA Championship in Fayetteville, Ark., and then placing as the low amateur at the U.S. Women’s Open over the weekend. A product of Chapel Hill, N.C., Kim posted rounds of 66, 72, 73 and 72 for a one-under-par, 283. Her 72-hole score of 283 was tied for the second-lowest by an amateur in U.S. Women’s Open history.
Carta, who is from Udine, Italy, closed her storied career as one of only four Blue Devils to win both a NCAA Individual and team national title. As a senior, she notched a 73.57 stroke average and collected her second collegiate victory at the Landfall Tradition. Carta had two top 10 finishes on the year and went 2-1 in match play to conclude the NCAA Championship. She closed the season as the No. 39 ranked golfer nationally.
The ShopRite LPGA Classic will take place at Seaview, a Dolce Hotel Bay Course in Galloway, N.J., and will feature 144 players with the top 70 and ties advancing to the weekend. Carta will be playing as an amateur this week as she will hold off on turning professional for the time being.
Both Carta and Kim helped lead Duke to its seventh NCAA Championship two weeks ago as the Blue Devils took down Stanford, Arizona and Wake Forest in match play.
