DURHAM, N.C.—Duke exploded for four goals in the opening 45 minutes en route to a 4-1 victory over Coastal Carolina to close out exhibition men’s soccer action. Daniele Proch had a brace, while rookie Scotty Taylor netted his first career score before storms rolled through the area and led to calling the game in the 52nd minute.

The Blue Devils took control right off the opening whistle, dominating time of possession. Moving the ball with ease all over the field, Duke was looking to attack from both of the wings. Max Moser sent in a couple of balls in from the right side that the Blue Devils couldn’t quite connect on.

Coastal Carolina started to get into the game a bit after about 20 minutes and nearly got on the scoreboard as Duke goalkeeper Will Pulisic made the diving stop to push away the free kick.

Duke responded less than three minutes later, moving the ball down to the right side. Senior forward Colby Agu, with his back to goal, touched the ball out wide to Max Moser. The senior midfielder slid the ball into the box where Daniele Proch ran onto it and finished it low into the left corner of the goal.

Proch made it 2-0 in the 41st minute, benefiting from a nice one touch by rookie Scotty Taylor. Kristófer Garđarsson provided the initial service from the right flank.

The goals continued to come fast and furiously over the final five minutes. Senior Brandon Williamson took advantage of a deflection off of a Coastal Carolina defender and ripped a shot into the left upper 90 from just outside the 18-yard box to give Duke the 3-0 lead.

Ninety-five seconds later, it was the right side proving deadly for the Blue Devils. Garđarsson again slotted the ball into the penalty area for Taylor to finish for the 4-0 halftime advantage.

Coastal Carolina got a goal back early in the second half as Tyrone Mondi finished a shot in the 50th minute.

Thunderstorms came in just a minute later, forcing the teams to their locker rooms and eventually to end the game with 38 minutes remaining on the clock.

Pulisic finished with one save in the 52 minutes of action, as did Ciroi for Coastal Carolina.

The Blue Devils officially kick off the 2019 campaign with the John Rennie Nike Invitational August 30. Duke hosts Furman and Cal State Bakersfield in the Labor Day Tournament. Both games will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
