ELON, N.C. – The Duke women’s cross country team opened the 2019 campaign with a fourth place showing under the lights of the Elon cross country course Friday evening in the Elon Opener.

“Tonight was a lot of fun watching the women execute their race plan,” said head coach Rhonda Riley. “They were very controlled for three laps and when the fourth lap came they pushed the pace. Overall it was a great evening for everyone.”

Elon took the top spot with 56 points, followed by North Carolina (59) and Campbell (62).

Sara Platek finished first for the Blue Devils and second overall as the junior clocked a time of 14:11.0, just one second behind the first place finisher. Senior Lindsay Billings placed next for Duke, taking fourth with a time of 14:24.3, while junior Leigha Torino finished right behind her with a fifth-place time of 14:25.8. Rounding out the Blue Devils were sophomore Rylee Bowen, who placed 34th (15:34.0) and senior Veronica Brtek, who earned 36th (15:37.6).

Duke takes a three week break before traveling to Blacksburg, Va., to compete in the Virginia Tech Invitational on Friday, September 20. Start time is set for 5:30 p.m.
