Indoor T&F: Alabama State Women Lead After Day 1

Defending champion Alabama State charged into first place after five completed events during day one of the 2012 SWAC Indoor Track and Field championships, held at the Birmingham Crossplex.

Highlighted by a meet record performance by the Alabama State distance medley relay team of Kesia Derilus, Breana Kelly, Lutrisha Altidor, and Courtney Gooch with a time of 12:23.87, the Hornets claimed championships in three of Thurday's five finals.

Jahneel Tyrell also won the long jump for ASU with a leap of 18-9.75, and Tyrisha Chambers won the high jump at 5-5.75.

Mississippi Valley State's Joyce Chumbo claimed the SWAC title in the 3000 meters with a time of 10:26.38.

Danielle Miller of Texas Southern won the shot put with a throw of 43-9.25.

Friday's field events begin at 8:00 a.m.  The running finals start at 12:30 p.m.
