Softball Set To Face Off With Niagara This Saturday At Noon
Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - The Marist softball team (20-19, 4-2 MAAC) will be in action this weekend with a single doubleheader at home versus Niagara. On April 21, the Red Foxes will do battle with MAAC rival Niagara (9-22, 2-2 MAAC) in a twinbill that begins at noon.
LAST TIME OUT - After five-plus hours and 18 innings of doubleheader action two teams, who came into the day with identical 3-1 MAAC records, left Young Field on the campus of Rider University with identical 4-2 conference records. On the strength of stellar pitching in the circle by Emily Osterhaus and an 11th inning home run by Haley Birnbaum, Marist earned a 2-0 game one win over Rider. The host Broncs earned the victory in a game two slugfest by a score of 10-7.
For the doubleheader, Ashley Corriss led a group of five Red Foxes with multiple hits as she went three for eight. Fellow senior Nicole DiVirgilio(3-9), Danielle Koltz (3-9), Taylor Kuzma (2-3) and Birnbaum (2-8) also had multi-hit days. In the circle, Marist's four pitchers combined for a 1.65 ERA and were led by Osterhaus, who threw 11 shutout innings and struck out five batters.
RECENT HISTORY - Last season at Niagara, the Red Foxes earned a doubleheader sweep of the Niagara Purple Eagles on May 1 by a score of 13-12 in Game 1 and 3-1 in Game 2. Five players had multiple hits in game one to lead the offensive explosion. In game two, solid team softball led to the victory. Sarah Carmody went 5-9 on the afternoon with one home run and three RBIs.
