Becca Wann will provide a blog chronicling her week at the Under-20 US National Training Camp in Carson, Calif.
Hi Spider Fans!
Tuesday we had our first game against the U-23 National Team. Although I didn't get into the game, I learned so much just watching the flow and tempo of the play at this level. The speed of play was incredible, and watching the game/listening to the coaches was a learning experience in itself. We tied 4-4 in regulation and then we won in PK's (penalty kicks)--World Cup style!
After the game was over, the players who didn't see action in over half of the game played in a 5 v. 5 round robin tournament to big goals. This was a great way to allow us to get touches on the ball. My team won our first three games and then lost in the finals. The intensity of these games was as high as it was in the first game because all of the players, myself included, were itching to get on the field. The competitive nature of these small-sided games was tangible, and losing in the finals definitely left a bitter taste in our mouths because no one wanted to lose!
Once we finished our training session we went in the locker room and I took an ice bath. It's amazing how quickly sports can unite people into a team and create bonds that transcend beyond the field. The players here are great and even though the majority have been playing together for over a year, they have welcomed me and have made me feel like I belong which speaks volumes about the players apart of this team. I can already tell that many of the friendships that I have made this week will go beyond this camp.
Overall it was an exceptional day, and a great learning experience for the future. We have another game on Thursday and it has been a pretty tough couple of days on the legs, but no matter how it goes, I know tomorrow will be yet another day full of learning and opportunities to experience all that this incredible week has to offer!
